To import .avi files:

First install Perian, which lets Finder preview your stuff.

Then use MPEG Streamclip.app:

  • File > Export to QuickTime.
  • Select the Apple Intermediate Codec.

Now you've got .mov files that iMovie will actually load.

iMovie: File > Import > Movies
